Coming to our Dezeen Day conference on 30 October? Here’s what we’re performing to lessen its influence on the atmosphere, and methods you can support.
Dezeen Day will discover subjects such as the circular economy and new supplies that could replace plastic. We hope delegates will leave feeling inspired about how they can make a distinction in future. We’ve also worked challenging to minimise the influence of the conference itself.
Encouraging public transport, walking and cycling
Our conference venue, BFI Southbank, is situated on London’s pedestrianised riverfront and is close to many Tube stations, the closest getting Waterloo (200 metres) and Embankment (600 metres). Many buses cease nearby. This tends to make it quick for delegates to use a mixture of public transport and walking to get there.
Bicycle parking can be discovered at Southbank Centre Square, and there are cycle employ stands on Concert Hall Strategy, each a brief stroll from the venue.
For delegates coming by train, there are 4 mainline stations inside quick walking distance: Waterloo, Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Blackfriars.
Speakers have been encouraged to travel by train and to offset their flights if coming by air. Just 3 of our 18 speakers are flying, all of them from the USA, with the rest of the speakers who are not primarily based in London travelling by train. Dutch speakers Richard Hutten and Nienke Hoogvliet are coming by Eurostar.
For complete travel specifics, see the Southbank Centre site.
(Nearly) no single-use plastic
We have attempted to remove single-use plastic completely. Conference lanyards will be printed on recycled card and function unbleached cotton cords. We have minimised the quantity of show vinyls we are utilizing, as an alternative putting posters all through the venue, printing reusable flags and utilizing digital screens for details.
Even so we have reluctantly applied a restricted quantity of vinyl signage on the exterior of the venue. We have not been capable to handle single-use plastic applied by suppliers such as caterers.
We are not supplying bottled water for delegates. Alternatively we have arranged for a plentiful provide of scrumptious London tap water to be served from the bar. It is significant to stay hydrated so please use the supplied glassware or bring your personal reusable water bottle.
Meat-no cost catering
We’ve asked caterers Benugo to offer a plant-primarily based lunch for delegates. We’re positive meat-eaters will not notice the distinction! These with a meat craving are no cost to stop by nearby restaurants and kiosks.
There are no paper tickets for Dezeen Day. Alternatively attendees will access the occasion with a digital ticket sent to their telephone, rather than printing tickets themselves or getting tickets in the post.
We’ve been operating with sustainability specialist Sophie Thomas, who will summarise the influence of the occasion at the finish of the day and recommend how we could do greater subsequent time.
She’s provided us a list of hard queries about our choice-creating and will also be asking delegates queries about how they travelled, what they ate and what they did with their waste. But the concept is not to make us really feel guilty, but to highlight methods to enhance.
